House walk through, August 31, 2016
We move in on September 1, 2016! We are excited. In this video, I do a walk through as we're finishing up things in preparation for the move tomorrow. I apologize for the shakiness of the video -- I wasn't able to hold the phone I was videoing with very steady. Hopefully, you can see what the house is like anyway.
I'll do another video in a week or two.

Oiled floors -- walk through 1-16-2016

We started oiling the hardwood floors on Sunday, January 10, 2016. We have two coats of oil on all of the upstairs floors, the stairs, the guest room, and the master bedroom floors. We have one coat of oil on the great room floor. In all, we'll apply three coats of hemp seed oil to the floors. I wanted to share how it looks at this point, especially compared to the last walk through video I mad...
CRF Straw Bale House Tour, 1-09-2016
Переглядів 5 тис.8 років тому
We've been working on the hardwood floors, sanding them and prepping them for an application of hemp seed oil. We need to do a thorough cleaning to remove the rest of the dust, and then we'll oil them all. The woods used are oak and beech that we harvested from our farm and a friend's farm. Another friend milled the boards and converted them into flooring after they dried in our barn for a few ...

A short video of Cosby Creek near the Low Gap Trail after a downpour on 6/22/2015. There were 5 of us on the trail, and we had to cross the creek. The footbridges were washed away. We didn't cross at this point, of course we found a way across further down the creek where it broke into multiple channels.

Straw in the Wall: Using light straw clay (slip straw) as interior wall fill

An instructional video by Cedar Ridge Farm (cedar-ridge-farm.blogspot.com). Light straw clay, also known as slip straw, is a healthy and simple material for filling interior (and exterior) walls. The process of packing the straw-clay mixture into the walls requires only simple tools and labor. In this video, we describe and demonstrate the process we used to pack 1,100 square feet of walls in t...

    • @MiltonMudburn
      @MiltonMudburn 2 роки тому

      The only mold issues I've experienced happened during the drying time when drying conditions were not ideal. When weather is too cool or too damp/humid, the mixture does not dry well, providing the opportunity & time for mold to potentially grow. You can kill or retard the mold growth with white distilled vinegar, but the best thing is just for everything to get thoroughly dry.

      @@kerrinmcnaughton1225 You can select any chapter you want, and it is displayed in the "Bibles" window (below the tabs for the different versions you have available). When you click on a link to a specific verse, E-Sword opens the whole chapter with that verse highlighted so you can see the context by scrolling up or down.

      Before I built with straw, I had the same question, especially about termites. The straw attracts no more wee beasties than other building materials, and termites don't eat straw - it's not composed of the cellulose they like.

    • @MiltonMudburn

      The R-value for straw walls increases with the thickness of the walls. Straw bales are 18" thick, nearly 5 times thicker than a 2x4 wall packed with slip straw. So, there is no way for a thinner wall to insulate like a thicker straw bale wall. I don't know how slip straw as insulation compares to other forms of insulation.

      @@MiltonMudburn That's cool. Curious how much this stuff weighs. Considering it for inside a step van. The walls would only be an inch or 2 thick. Wondering how it would work. Exterior walls are made of aluminum and then there are aluminum ribs so it seems like I can do something similar to what you did in the video. R value seems low though for only a wall that's going to be an inch and a half thick. Would get better r value with that poly stuff but I don't like it. Hemp and wool look pretty good too but expensive. I like the idea of making something. Just don't know if it would offer much insulation in this case.

    You could apply a very liquid pure clay 'slip', with a brush, before the first full coat. This gives a nice key for the clay, sand, straw render to better adhere to; and also serves to flatten out any wispy, sticky-out straw pieces. Be sure to rehydrate (spray on water) though, before another clay coat goes on.
